Shared Hosting

Shared hosting providers have multiple websites and multiple customers on a single computer. The prices are less expensive because you are sharing resources with other companies. The advantage is the cheaper price. The disadvantage is that someone else's website on the server can take away resources from all of the other sites on the same server.

Only look at one box at a time or you'll get dizzy!

Windows Hosting

The operating system of the web server is unimportant, unless you are using a server-side programming language, such as ASP (active server pages), JSP (Java server pages), CFML (Cold Fusion Markup Language), PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor), etc. If you are using ASP, you will need a Windows server or another server with an ASP processor.

UNIX Hosting

UNIX is the most common server operating system on the Web. Most of the hosting solutions offered (especially shared hosting) will be UNIX or LINUX-based. They will usually include the ability to use PHP or CGI-BIN scripts for advanced functionality on your website.

Dedicated Servers

Hosting companies allow you to rent an entire server for your hosting needs by offering dedicated servers. There are various types of dedicated servers available, such as managed servers, unmanaged servers, virtual servers, and more. The disadvantage is that dedicated servers are much more expensive. The advantage is that having your own web server eliminates the possiblity of another customer's site slowing your site down.

Multiple Solutions

The web hosting providers listed below offer more than one of any of the services listed on this page. This can include shared hosting or dedicated hosting; linux hosting, unix hosting or microsoft windows hosting; or any of the other solutions listed.

Hosting and Design

Some hosting providers offer site design in addition to hosting. Usually the site design is based on a pre-configured template with a bit of customization and the host uses some sort of content management system (CMS) to allow you to update your site.

Specialized Hosting

There are many other options available for specialized web hosting needs. Some of these include small business network hosting, eCommerce hosting, shopping cart hosting, sharepoint hosting, etc. Again, the disadvantage of these solutions is the increased cost, while the advantage is the customized solution to fit your hosting needs.

Business Hosting

Business hosting solutions offer a more robust feature set than a standard shared web hosting solution. Business hosting solutions usually include options for eCommerce, website statistics, search engine submission, and more.

Shopping Cart Hosting

A shopping cart allows you to sell products and services on the Internet. Some hosting companies offer shopping cart services that allow you to create and maintain a shopping cart through your web browser. Merchant services and secure connections (SSL) are additional features offered by some providers.

Microsoft Exchange Hosting

Microsoft Exchange is an email server that many large companies use to handler their email. These companies offer email hosting using Microsoft Exchange, which not only includes resources for email, but for tasks, contacts and calendars, as well.

SharePoint Hosting

Microsoft SharePoint is a content sharing, content management system that allows business to organize information and make it available to employees, vendors and customers. The following companies offer SharePoint hosting services.

Virtual Private Servers

Virtual Private Servers are an advanced form of shared hosting. You will have greater access to your server and usually more options and features available, along with a higher price.

Reseller Hosting

A hosting reseller program allows you to resell the web hosting services that you are purchasing from the hosting company. You can host your own site, as well as others, in the allotted space and pay for your hosting fees.
